French company manufacturing ink cartridges armor recently moved into the 3D printing materials industry with the launch of its first filament line, Owa 3D. The new filament, which is fully recycled and made from high impact polystyrene (HIPS), is part of the cartridge manufacturer’s effort to reduce, reuse and recycle plastic waste from printer cartridges.

About a year ago, Armor launched its Owa campaign, which aimed to reduce the amount of plastic cartridge waste in the world. According to the company, 360 million printer cartridges are purchased each year in Western Europe alone, a staggering 70% of which either end up in landfills or are incinerated and not recycled. Armor developed Owa as a circular economy approach to deal with this waste and reduce it significantly. Since the program was launched, Armor has been collecting old cartridges from companies and effectively converting them to new cartridges or breaking their materials down to become new office supplies.

Now Armor seems to be branching out even further with its Owa initiative with its new 3D printing filament. If you didn’t guess it, the Owa 3D filament itself is made from plastic from recycled cartridges as well as from other sources like yogurt containers etc. As mentioned earlier, the filament is made of high impact polystyrene, also known as HIPS, which is a more flexible and durable material than other standard 3D printing materials like PLA or ABS.

Owa 3D, currently available in both France and Japan, is preparing to launch across Europe (e.g. Germany, Belgium, Spain and Italy) as well as in the UK and Switzerland. The filament is compatible with most FDM 3D printers and will be available in standard filament spools of 750 g and in two diameters (1.75 mm and 2.85 mm). In addition, the recycled HIPS filament will be available in a range of 12 different colors and can be tested by customers using “Discovery” packages made up of six 162g spools of different colors.

Also noteworthy about Armor’s Owa process is that the company has agreed to pick up recyclable used cartridges from companies in order to create further incentives for recycling their office waste. From there, the used cartridges are taken to one of Armor’s processing plants, where they are either processed into new cartridges or into 3D printing filaments. The 3D printing filaments are currently being produced in the Armor factory in Morocco and in La Chevrolière near Nantes.

No prices have yet been set for the new recycled filament, but prospects and customers can follow the countdown to the product launch on the Owa 3D website.

Floreon Unveils Revolutionary New PLA/Polyester Filament – four Instances Stronger Than Typical PLA – 3DPrint.com

When it comes to this, PLA is usually the material of choice for the majority of desktop 3D printer enthusiasts. The material is environmentally friendly (at least when compared to ABS), affordable, versatile and non-toxic and is perfect for many DIY projects. Against this background, there are also disadvantages when using PLA in contrast to other filaments such as ABS or nylon. For one thing, it’s not the hardest material on the market. It can crack easily and isn’t very flexible, which makes it a bad choice for certain projects.

A new company based in Hull, UK called Floreon is looking to change all of that. Floreon has been named an “Innovative Bioplastic Company” and has officially announced the launch of its brand new bio 3D printing filament called Floreon3D. The new filament, a product of 4 years of research with the University of Sheffield, is a PLA / polyester composite that the company claims is four times as tough as a typical PLA filament.

“We wanted to offer a high quality 3D printing filament that is far better than conventional PLA,” explained Dr. Andrew Gill, Floreon Technical Director. “It took us five years, but I’m happy to say the hard work has paid off. We found that the resulting product provides a smooth printing experience with excellent interlayer adhesion and is less likely to break than traditional PLA. In addition, it is four times stronger and with an excellent matte finish, the products it produces look very professional. All of this is achieved without compromising the attractive aspects of PLA such as low odor and low printing temperatures compared to other common plastics for 3D printing. “

According to the company, the main features of this new composite filament include:fl5

  • Flexible, extremely tough and stronger than typical PLA (stiffness = 1.9 GPa, tolerance = 0.05 mm)
  • Doesn’t degrade when exposed to UV light like typical PLA

The company says the new material is perfect for a wide variety of uses that aren’t just limited to 3D printing. These uses include plant labels, food packaging, blow molding, and more.

There is no question about that 3D printing pens can be used to create some pretty amazing and creative things. However, never before did we have to take a second look at a 3D pen sculpture to see if it wasn’t.

The artist Martin Binder has created a four-meter-long birch tree sculpture with a 3D printing pen and a wood-plastic composite filament. The piece entitled “Portrait of a Birch” can currently be seen in Berlin’s Super Bien! Contemporary art greenhouse where it is hung in a glass case.

From a distance the 3D drawn tree is scary and one could easily and falsely believe that it is a real birch branch hanging behind glass. On closer inspection, however, the precisely drawn lines of the plastic of the 3D pen become clear. Amazingly, the 3D pen’s plastic filament mimics the pattern and visual structure of an actual birch tree.

For an additional feeling of authenticity, Binder decided to work exclusively with a filament made of plastic and birch wood. He adds that he has carefully studied natural birch trees to perfectly capture their appearance. “My eyes were the 3D scanner and my hands were the 3D printer,” he says.

In total, it took Binder over 250 hours to create the tree with a 3D printer (that’s more than six weeks of full-time work!). The effort is evident in the fine details and the natural feeling of the industry.

The 3D drawn branch is displayed in a glass display case that was a conscious choice of Binder. He explains: “I spend a lot of time on Instagram where I consume pictures behind a pane of glass. This work is a three-dimensional equivalent of consuming digital media. A fragment of a tree can be visually experienced behind the glass walls of the unconventional exhibition space. “

Since the tree is on display outside, the viewer can visit it at any time of the day or night.

Should you buy AmazonBasics filament for your 3D Printer?

Do you have to purchase AmazonBasics filament to your 3D Printer?

With 3D printing becoming more mainstream and the cost of filaments falling like a rock, Amazon had to join in at some point, and they have with their AmazonBasics filament line. The AmazonBasics brand usually offers great value for money with serviceable but not necessarily high quality products, and the AmazonBasics filament seems no different. Personally, I have only used the PLA so far, although PETg and ABS are available for purchase. Once I’ve used them, I’ll update this article with more information.

The filament itself is very even across the board. With a new filament, it’s always a good idea to check the diameter with a micrometer to see if it’s really 1.75mm +/- 0.05mm, and the Amazon Basics filament will appear on both reels, that i have to be consistent. The filament came in a sealed pouch with a desiccant pouch to keep it dry, and there was no evidence of moisture during printing or in the final model. As a nice surprise, on the side of the roll you can see how much filament you have left over for printing. I can’t tell you how many times this would have been useful with other prints. Knowing roughly how much is left on a roll will greatly reduce waste.

When printing with the Amazon Basics PLA, the print was pretty even throughout and the final vase feels solid with good layer adhesion. I printed the vase in vase mode, a continuous line of filament with a fairly high thickness, so it’s difficult to tell how smooth the details are, but friends on Twitter managed to get great results even at high resolutions.

Cons of pricing

There were really only two downsides that I saw. The first is in the transparent PLA that I tried. The pressure seems to increase a bit as it cools down irregularly. This was fixed by editing some settings in my slicer. As you can see in the picture above, this pucker did not occur with the black PLA. Now, light colors in PLA are notorious for being sensitive – frankly, white PLA is such a pain I rarely print with it anymore -. So if you persevere, you can likely fix this problem, but it’s worth mentioning as a bug.

The other problem, surprisingly, is the pricing structure. At $ 19.99 for a single reel, Amazon puts it in competition with Matterhackers and Hatchbox, which make a very good filament instead of the lower market it should be on. For just $ 12.99, you can purchase 1kg of domestic PLA, which has no noticeable difference to the Amazon Basics material. The only perk of Amazon Basics is the volume discount – if you buy the five-roll package it’s only $ 79.99, which is $ 16 per roll – and the fact that PLA, ABS, and PETg all have the same price.

Should you buy it?

As a filament, it’s not bad, in fact, it’s pretty good, but only buy it if you buy in bulk. Now most of us 3D printers buy filaments in bulk, after all, a large cosplay helmet can use a 1kg reel on its own. However, if you only buy one roll at a time, you will need to consider other options. Nothing about the Amazon Basics filament knocks me out, but maybe that’s why it’s just called.

Firm Creates Glowing and Steel Filament for 3D Printers

Full-color 3D printing seems to be eluding this technology field. However, it is not the only one. There are others, like 3D printing in the dark.

At least that was the case until recently. Now, if 3D printing technology were a living sentient being, it could give rise to joy in gaining the ability to make things that are phosphorescent.

As it is, we, ordinary people, have to cheer ourselves while ColorFabb basks in it.

You see, the ColorFabb folks invented a filament that glows in the dark.

We have seen them before, spheres that are somehow charged with light during the day and glow greenish at night, at least for a few hours.

Now ColorFabb has a filament called GlowFill (originality galore) that does the same thing.

As if PLA / PHA (compound), XT copolyester, and WoodFill (a wood-based filament) weren’t surprising enough (and they come in a whole range of colors).

There’s one more filament that ColorFabb has released: BronzeFill, a metal filament whose name is about as self-explanatory as GlowFill.

They have been tested for some time and bambooFill will be added soon. Only GlowFill can be sent. BronzeFill can be pre-ordered, but it will take a while for it to arrive.
