Vietnam nylon filament yarn faces stiff Indian duties

India is considering imposing anti-dumping duties on nylon filament yarn imported from Vietnam
India can apply anti-dumping duties of up to US $ 719 per ton on Vietnamese nylon filament yarn for five years.
A Hindu Business Line report said the move was being considered after India’s Directorate-General for Anti-Dumping and Allied Customs (DGAD) received complaints from five domestic textile companies about importing such yarns cheaply from Vietnam.
In response, the DGAD proposed anti-dumping tariffs of between USD 128.06 and USD 719.44 per ton for nylon filament yarn imported from Vietnam and the EU in order to mitigate the damage to domestic industry.
The Directorate found that imports for the year increased to 13,799 tonnes from October 2015 to March 2017, compared to 7,201 tonnes from 2013 to 2014.
However, a Times of India report stated that nylon fabric makers have resisted the move and will allow Indian yarn makers to monopolize prices.
Market sources said yarns and fibers, including nylon filament yarn made in Vietnam and the EU, are 20 percent cheaper than yarn made by domestic companies.
The final decision on this issue will be made by the Indian Ministry of Finance, but no date has yet been given when it will happen.
In the Times of India report, Mayur Golwala, a representative of Powerloom weavers, was quoted as saying, “We urge the central government not to accept DGAD’s recommendation on anti-dumping duty on nylon yarn.
“The government should think of not just five to six nylon yarn manufacturers in the country, but thousands of weavers and workers associated with the industry.”
