Polymaker launches carbon negative PLA-based 3D printing filament

Polymaker launches carbon detrimental PLA-based 3D printing filament

Polymaker has announced the introduction of a PLA-based filament, which is characterized by additional toughness and lower environmental impact.

The PolyTerra, which is compatible with all extrusion-based 3D printers with PLA settings, is Polymaker’s first product for carbon negative materials. It was developed by compounding organic materials with a reduced amount of raw PLA required, which also gives the material greater toughness and a matte finish on printed parts.

According to Polymaker, the PolyTerra PLA material has seen an improvement in mechanical properties compared to standard PLA due to the mixture of organic elements, which improves the toughness and impact resistance of the material. These naturally occurring elements are also credited with ensuring a matt surface, which is to be improved by the fourteen available color variants. Four of these are pastel colors, which have a particularly matte finish and help absorb light and hide the layer lines of the printed parts.

After printing, the PolyTerra PLA is intended to demonstrate easy removal of the carrier without tools, while the surface of parts can be sanded “without the plastic rolling over or chewing into long beads”. A wide range of paints can also be applied, with the open pores on the outside of the parts allowing the paints to hold a strong bond on the surface.

When developing the PolyTerra filament, Polymaker went to great lengths to ensure that the material was as environmentally friendly as possible. While it’s formulated from organic materials that reduced the plastic content and man-made methods of making the bioplastic, it’s also been spooled with recycled labels and outer packaging, with all of the fact sheets being moved online. A composability test carried out by a third party showed an accelerated composability compared to a PLA sample, with a degradation of 76.9 after 45 days under test conditions of 58 ° C ± 2 ° C / ~ 50% humidity % reached.

The company hopes the “unique properties” of PolyTerra PLA are a “step in the right direction for a plastics company”. Polymaker has also partnered with www.onetreeplanted.org to ensure that with every reel of PolyTerra sold, a tree is planted to reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide. After ten years, each tree can absorb 22 kg of carbon dioxide annually.

The Polymaker recommended retail price for the PolyTerra filament is US $ 19.99 / EUR 19.95 per 1 kg.

3D Systems and Jabil Create ‘High Speed Fusion’ Filament 3D Printing Technology - 3DPrint.com

3D Techniques and Jabil Create ‘Excessive Velocity Fusion’ Filament 3D Printing Expertise – 3DPrint.com

Just as Stratasys was starting to get into the 3D Systems home lawn, 3D Systems (NYSE: DDD) is taking such a step with the introduction of a fused-filament 3D printer called the Roadrunner. Roadrunner was developed in collaboration with contract manufacturer Jabil Inc. (NYSE: JBL) and is based on what the partners call High Speed Fusion (HSF). They claim that “[t]Thanks to advanced electrical motion control, this unique system operates at speeds and levels of precision that go well beyond current state-of-the-art production platforms. It has a “temperature capability and available building areas that are larger than those of the competing systems”. With this, 3D Systems and Jabil are targeting the aerospace and automotive industries.

“With the introduction of our high-speed fusion filament printer, 3D Systems is building on the organizational focus we took on in 2020 and expanding our presence in growing markets that require highly reliable products such as aerospace and automotive,” said Dr. Jeffrey Graves, President and CEO, 3D Systems. “Our investments in this solution and the collaboration with Jabil enable our customers to increase productivity and performance through additive manufacturing with a hardware, software and material platform that is specially tailored to the requirements and requirements of an industrial environment. The value proposition we believe compelling will open new markets for our company valued at over $ 400 million, with the promise of new markets beyond these current opportunities as the economics of this new technology platform are fully demonstrated. ”

3D Systems claims that the new machine, of which no images have yet been publicly released, the[h]Highest separation rates combined with the best dimensional accuracy of all industrial standard classes for melted filament platforms. It is also said that the system will have the “lowest cost on landed parts” and the ability to 3D print using high temperature materials such as ULTEM and carbon fiber reinforced nylon, as well as filaments for general use including ABS and PETg ESD.

Roadrunner is capable of 3D printing end pieces for aircraft interiors and ducts, drones, under the hood and dashboard of vehicles, and for general industrial purposes. This applies in addition to tools and devices as well as prototypes.

“We are proud of the advances made by the Jabil and 3D Systems teams and the ability of this solution to overcome the limitations of current market offerings at the historical system and subsystem level,” said John Dulchinos, vice president of 3D Printing and Digital Manufacturing, Jabil. “Jabil understands the needs of a large manufacturing environment and we look forward to continuing to work with 3D Systems to bring this new system to the market and use it in our own factories.”

Driven by Aniwaa

This is an exciting time for industrial 3D printing indeed. The last time 3D Systems had an extrusion-based system was the consumer-centric Cube line, which was scrapped with the company’s entire consumer division in 2015. Now the company appears to be re-entering this segment with an emphasis on industrial applications.

No specs have been released, but the Roadrunner sounds big and fast, reminiscent of machines like Cincinnati Inc.’s BAAM (Big Area Additive Manufacturing) system or its competitors. In this case, however, the system prints with filaments rather than plastic pellets, which does not seem intuitive for fast processing. Many in the industry have said that pellets are the future as it may be easier to work with material that is already available to the injection molding world. Michigan Tech’s Joshua Pearce also points out that directly recycled material is easier to use through pellet extrusion, as it bypasses the step required to turn plastic waste into new filament.

The 3D printing industry is in the midst of an interesting change. In particular, Stratasys is now manufacturing stereolithography (SLA) 3D printers through the acquisition of Origin and RPS. This was the territory of 3D Systems when 3D Systems invented SLA in 1984. Now 3D Systems is taking Stratasys into its own game of material extrusion. Desktop Metal and EnvisionTEC are now under one roof. Interestingly enough, Executive Editor Joris Peels just mentioned that someone like Jabil could start making their own 3D printers.

This is a time of mergers, acquisitions, and other surprises. What will happen next? In the meantime, we will certainly learn more about Roadrunner in the near future. The partners have been developing this platform for over a year and want to deliver Roadrunner from 2022.

Stratasys Announces First Carbon Fiber 3D Printing Filament for F123 - 3DPrint.com

Stratasys Broadcasts First Carbon Fiber 3D Printing Filament for F123 – 3DPrint.com

Stratasys has introduced a new carbon fiber material for Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM). While the company has had carbon fiber filament available for its industrial printers for several years, this is the first carbon-based option for the F123 series.

The new filament is called ABS-CF10 and is based on ABS thermoplastics. The “CF-10” stands for Carbon Fiber 10, as the filament consists of 10 percent by weight of chopped carbon fiber. The carbon fiber makes it 15% stronger and over 50% stiffer than the standard ABS filament, and Stratasys calls it a “compelling alternative to metal parts”.

ABS-CF10 is designed for use with the Stratasys F123 series of benchtop printers, which are lighter than the company’s Fortus industrial systems. According to the company’s press release, it will work specifically with the high-performance F170, F270 and F370 printers. The company hasn’t yet announced whether it will work with the newer, smaller F120.

In a way, this release has been a long time coming. Stratasys founder S. Scott Crump filed the first patent for an FDM printer back in 1989, but copycat FFF printers have been printing with carbon fiber filaments for more than five years as part of a larger evolution in carbon fiber 3D printing techniques. This also includes continuous fiber reinforcement.

Before this version, Stratasys only had carbon fiber material for its industrial printers. Released in 2017, Nylon 12 carbon fiber (FDM Nylon 12CF) was made for their industrial Fortus printers. Nylon 12CF is 35 weight percent carbon fiber and Stratasys reported it had the best stiffness-to-weight ratio of any FDM thermoplastic. Accordingly, it was developed for designers and engineers putting together small production parts and working prototypes, and was popular in industrial applications such as jigs and fixtures.

The red painted parts of this bike frame were printed using Stratasys’ nylon 12CF, the company’s only FDM carbon fiber option, prior to this new version (Image courtesy of Stratasys).

In fact, it was so popular that Stratasys released an entirely new printer to deal with it. In 2018 they released the Fortus F380mc, a scaled-down version of the Fortus 450 that could only print in carbon fiber.

With the new version, Stratasys focuses on applications in the aerospace, automotive, industrial and leisure industries. “There’s a reason manufacturers are increasingly turning to 3D printed carbon fiber materials,” said Dick Anderson, Stratasys senior vice president of manufacturing. “It’s incredibly strong, versatile, and light. We want to enable all of our FDM customers to use these material properties. “

F123 users can look forward to getting their hands on ABS-CF10 in April.

Recreus promotes 3D printing sustainability with new 100% recycled TPU filament

Spain-based manufacturer of 3D printing materials, Recreus, has launched a new flexible TPU filament that is 100% recycled.

Reciflex consists exclusively of waste from the shoe industry and Recreus’ own production processes. As sustainability drifts into modern business practices, the company is making a contribution to the circular economy and reportedly delivering the same high level of performance as Recreus’ Filaflex flagship flexible filament.

The material is described as “easy to print” and can be used with all TPU-compatible FFF 3D printers on the market. Parts made with Reciflex can also be recycled once they have served their purpose. In addition to introducing the new material, Recreus has been renamed slightly. The company name now stands for “Recycle, Create, Use”.

Flexible parts production with Reciflex

how is it done? As soon as the raw material is recovered, Recreus magnetically shields the polymer in order to pick out and remove any remaining metal residues. This enables the company to guarantee that the final filament will perform as expected during the printing process. The TPU then goes through a plastic grinder to crush it and turn it into small pellets. At this point it is drawn into a spool of usable filament.

It’s worth noting that Reciflex is currently only available in glossy black, as the company adds a black pigment to the final product to homogenize its otherwise rainbow-colored color. Although the TPU filament comprises several polymer sources, it offers an excellent set of mechanical properties, impact resistance, and solvent resistance. The list of potential uses includes RC car wheels and protective covers for phones, GoPros and drones – staples of the 3D printing community.

Various Reciflex spools can have hardnesses in the range of 96A to 98A SHORE ‘A’ due to the slight variations in their raw materials. However, the company says this difference cannot be noticed in the final 3D printed parts. For successful 3D printing of the filament, Recreus recommends a nozzle temperature of 220 to 235 ° C, a bed temperature of 50 to 60 ° C, and a print speed between 20 and 60 mm / s.It is available in spools of 750 g and 3 kg with a Filament diameters of 1.75 mm and 2.85 mm available.

Promotion of the circular economy

Additive manufacturing as a whole is largely viewed as a more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional manufacturing techniques, but the message isn’t that clear when looking at the entire product lifecycle. Therefore, the advance towards sustainable raw material production is important.

The German polymer manufacturer Covestro announced the introduction of a new sustainable line of 3D printing materials back in November. Similar to Reciflex, the Addigy filament range is partly made from recycled polymers and ultimately aims to meet the needs of the circular economy.

Elsewhere in Amsterdam, 3D printing filament maker Reflow has already launched its own environmentally friendly line of translucent ‘Seaglass’ materials. The company’s sustainable line of six rPETG filaments is made from recycled plastic from the region and is characterized by its impact resistance and temperature resistance.

taulman3D Introduces New Versatile PCTPE 3D Printing Filament That includes Unimaginable Properties – 3DPrint.com

taulman3D has quickly developed into one of the most innovative filament manufacturers in the 3D printing sector. They’re constantly bringing new materials to market that can be used in a wide variety of 3D printers. Whether they are working with Graphene 3D Lab to produce a graphene reinforced nylon material for 3D printing or nylon material for selective laser sintering 3D printers, lately they seem to be one step ahead of everyone else.

Today taulman3D announced to 3DPrint.com that another new material is being launched aimed at FFF-based desktop 3D printers. The material, called PCTPE, stands for “Plasticized Copolyamide TPE”. It’s a chemical copolymer made from highly flexible nylon and thermoplastic elastomer for the chemical and materials engineers out there.

For those of you like me who have no idea when it comes to fancy chemical names, this material is basically your typical flexible 3D printing filament for steroids. It works in virtually any FFF-based 3D printer that can print with ABS. Unlike many other flexible filaments that have problems printing on extruders that require 1.75mm filament because they are too flexible in their raw material form, PCTPE does not have this problem. This is due to a special “pulling” process that taulman3D required of its manufacturers. Basically, the material is stretched during the final manufacturing process. This is a tactic used in making large nylon ropes for large ships when docking because it increases the tensile strength of the ropes. It apparently works with filaments as well and increases its tensile strength as well. The filament does not kink or fold as much as other flexible filaments.

pctpefeatured

It also gives users greater flexibility in both print properties and setting options.

“This additional process allowed us to increase the percentage of TPE, resulting in a material that offers the user a wide range of design flexibility based mainly on the nozzle size, the number of perimeters and the percentage of the inner filler used in the cutting,” explained the company. “From thin pieces that clump together like thin paper to thicker shoe soles with just the right flexibility, PCTPE is an easy-to-print material that meets a long list of user needs.”

pctpe4Not only is PCTPE much easier to print than other flexible filaments on the market today, but it also offers some really incredible and unique end results once it is extruded. Tested by 183 people – including some well-known people in the 3D printing space like Jeremy Simon from 3DUniverse and e-NABLE, and Daniel Noree from the OpenR / C and Open Railway projects – it has shown some really big benefits.

With a tensile PSI of 5,043 and a module PSI of 10,954, products printed with PCTPE are not only flexible, but also extremely strong. One of the unique properties of PCTPE is that it doesn’t delaminate, which means you can actually fold it along the printed thread axes without it falling apart. It can be cut, bent, rolled, and tightened without falling apart or distorting.

pctpe7

taulman3D recommends the use of PCTPE for cell phone cases, used parts for robotics, wearables, prostheses, insoles, shoes, cosplay articles and other fashion-related articles and clothing. The filament can be easily dyed with any acid based dye (RITT) in less than 5 minutes and can even be coated with acid based antimicrobial coatings that would be very useful for shoes and / or prostheses. It prints in bright white with a reflective nylon surface and has very low shrinkage properties. Here are some more unique facts about this new PCTPE filament:

  • Prints on both Bowdens and direct drive extruders.
  • Prints at 230 ° C and is compatible with most other ABS printing settings.
  • Provides a super-layer-to-layer connection that enables individual peripheral walls to be folded along the thread axes without separation.
  • Incredible texture, similar to nylon, perfect for 3D printing wearable objects.
  • More advantages in the following video:

If you want your hands on this latest product from PCTPE, you can do so at taulman3D.com. It is available in both 1.75mm and 2.85mm 1 pound coils. However, this is not all for taulman3D. Keep an eye out for two more materials that are coming from you very soon.

What do you think of this latest filament option from taulman3D? What are your potential uses? Discuss in the taulman3D PCTPE Filament Forum Thread on 3DPB.com. Check out more photos of this new filament below.
