INTAMSYS and Victrex accomplice to propel high-performance PAEK filament

Manufacturer of FFF 3D printers INTAMSYS is the world’s first global reseller of polymer specialists VictrexThe new polyaryletherketone (PAEK) filament – VICTREX AM 200. Through the collaboration, INTAMSYS is also the first company in the filament fusion network proposed by Victrex to facilitate and promote the use of AM 200 and future PAEK-based filaments around the world.

Optimized for additive manufacturing

According to INTAMSYS, most of the PEEK and PEKK filaments available on the market today, although suitable for 3D printing, have been formulated for traditional manufacturing processes such as injection molding. As a result, they may not be optimal for the additive extrusion process with poor interlayer adhesion and poor Z strengths.

Victrex’s PAEK material is believed to provide relief as the company claims the AM 200 was specifically designed and optimized for 3D printing. When using an FFF 3D printer, the filament should have both higher Z and XY strengths compared to existing PAEK material.

Put the AM 200 to the test

INTAMSYS carried out some internal tests with AM 200 FUNMAT PRO 410 3D printers to see what Victrex was raving about. With XY strengths of up to 90 MPa and elongations of up to 9%, the filament turned out to be a worthy competitor to PEEK. The results also show that AM 200 has better interlayer adhesion than other non-optimized PAEK materials – at least on an INTAMSYS machine.

The duo attributes this to its slow rate of crystallization and refined viscosity, which allow for easier flow through the nozzle. The low shear rates of the material also result in greater outdoor stability once extrusion has taken place. The high wear and temperature resistance of the AM 200 as well as its fatigue and corrosion resistance make it suitable for long-term chemical contact applications.

Polyketone family polymers are usually quite similar in properties, but can have different uses. Chemical company Evonik recently his Vestakeep i4 3DF PEEK filament specially developed for medical implants. The material meets the requirements of ASTM F2026 and is suitable for long-term contact with body fluids.

Elsewhere, EOS has before released a powdery high performance, carbon fiber reinforced PEKK material for its polymer SLS systems. The high temperature HT-23 material was developed in collaboration with Boeing and is primarily for aerospace applications.

SABIC unveils new portfolio of high-performance filament grades for FDM 3D printing

SABIC, a thermoplastic technology company, presented a new portfolio of high-performance filament grades for FDM 3D printing at RAPID + TCT.

SABIC said the new products address a growing global demand for grater material choices in the industrial filament market and form the basis of the company’s strategy to advance additive manufacturing from prototyping technology to mass production.

The filaments are designed for use with Stratasys Fortus printers and feature the same composition as the company’s injection molding grades. SABIC’s new filaments are based on three of the leading resins: ULTEM polyetherimide (PEI); CYCOLAC acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS); and LEXAN polycarbonate (PC).

Manufacturers can use SABIC’s new filaments to create high-performance, long-lasting end-use parts.

SABIC’s six new materials that offer improved performance will be showcased at RAPID + TCT at booth # 2537. These include:

• ULTEM ™ AM9085F Filament – This is a high performance PEI product made from ULTEM ™ 9085 resin. This product offers high heat resistance and mechanical strength, is UL94 V-0 compliant at 1.5 and 3.0 mm, and meets the requirements of FAR 25.853 and OSU 65/65 with little FST development. It is available in black and natural (unpigmented) colors.

• CYCOLAC ™ AMMG94F Filament – This is a general purpose ABS product made from CYCOLAC ™ MG94 resin. It offers a balance of properties suitable for a wide variety of applications and is UL94 HB compliant at 3.0mm. It is available in black, white and natural colors (unpigmented).

• LEXAN ™ AM1110F Filament – This general purpose PC product is made from LEXAN ™ HF1110 resin. It offers higher thermal properties than general purpose ABS filaments, is UL94 V-2 compliant at 3.0 mm and is available in white.

“The introduction of our first six new filaments, based on SABIC’s world-class portfolio of high-performance engineering thermoplastics, will help us identify a pathway for introducing future breakthrough materials solutions for additive manufacturing,” said Lori Louthan, director of bulk transportation . SABIC. “We use our extensive material and processing know-how to manufacture new filaments with higher performance than the current offerings, with the aim of extending their use to the development of production parts.

“As with other plastic conversion processes in the past, SABIC aims to make an important contribution to the growth and success of our customers and the additive manufacturing industry through advanced materials and processes.”

SABIC will also show applications printed from its disruptive development materials, which are designed for modeling enamel deposits and which may offer improved performance compared to currently available products. These materials include:

  • High impact polycarbonate filament for more robust performance during processing and secondary operations, as well as the ability to withstand end use conditions with high impact strength.
  • Polycarbonate and ULTEM healthcare filaments made from SABIC resins enable printed parts with excellent mechanical performance, sterilizability, and biocompatibility.
  • High impact resistant ULTEM filament with the advantages of the ULTEM 9085 resin, but with higher toughness.
  • Flame, smoke and toxicity compliant polycarbonate filament for use in demanding aerospace applications.
  • EXTEM thermoplastic polyimide filament with a heat resistance exceeding that of ULTEM filament.
  • Tear support materials for SABIC’s ULTEM, PC and ABS filaments offer additional choices in filament material supply.

Verbatim introduces new PRIMALLOY BLACK high-performance 3D printing filament

Literally announced the introduction of a new high speed, high performance filament for material extrusion called PRIMALLOY BLACKat which it is presented TCT show Later that month.

The filament is a new variant of the PRIMALLOY Product that revealed it almost three years ago. It will serve designers looking to create 3D working objects where flexibility and durability are paramount. Verbatim envisions that these applications can be used in the automotive, household and industrial sectors, including items from door locks and plugs to robotic parts and protective components.

PRIMALLOY is a thermoplastic ester elastomer (TPEE) that offers improved flexibility and rubber elasticity compared to standard TPE materials. It offers high performance properties in terms of mechanical strength and resistance to oil, base, solvents, chemicals, flex fatigue and heat as well as excellent properties at low temperatures and high hardness resistance over a wide temperature range, which makes PRIMALLOY particularly suitable for outdoor applications.

The latest Verbatim material was developed by the parent company. Mitsubishi Chemical. The company also offers PP, PET, BVOH (water-soluble carrier materials), PLA and ABS. All Verbatim filaments are made in Japan from high quality materials and manufactured with extremely tight tolerances to ensure even feed and stable pressure.

“Customers have been pushing us to bring a black version of our popular PRIMALLOY material to market and here it is,” said Shigeyuki Furomoto, manager, Global CEO Office of Mitsubishi Chemical Media. “We expect good demand as most applications that require a flexible material, such as door or window seals, handles, brackets, etc., tend to be black.”

PRIMALLOY Black will be among Verbatim’s products on display at the upcoming TCT Show in Birmingham, UK Booth E46 between Tuesday September 26th – Thursday September 28th.
