German chemical company BASF is a prime example of how the world’s largest chemical producer recently used its sizeable financial leverage to begin its expansion into 3D printing. Another important step on this path was recently taken when BASF acquired Innofil3D, the Dutch company for 3D printing materials.

Innofil3D, based in the Netherlands, manufactures filaments for FDM / FFF 3D printing. Founded in 2014 as a spin-off from Applied Polymer Innovations, the company already has a large international sales network. Thermoplastic materials include PLA, PET, PVA and ABS filaments, all of which are customized and of particularly high quality to ensure an excellent end product at the end of the 3D printing process. This new acquisition has pushed these efforts even further and can now include the entire Innofil3D product range in its growing 3D printing portfolio. BASF’s presence in the world of additive manufacturing also includes BASF 3D Printing Solutions, which was recently founded in Heidelberg.

“With this acquisition, BASF goes one step further in the value chain and can now not only provide plastic granulate for 3D printing, but also the next processing stage: the filaments,” said Volker Hammes, Managing Director of BASF New Business.

BASF New Business focuses on the identification of new chemical-based materials, technologies and system solutions and works closely with BASF’s global research platforms. Key areas of interest for new business opportunities include transportation, construction, consumer goods, health and nutrition, electronics, agriculture, and energy and resources. BASF’s innovation arm also aims to promote technological progress through the development of new products.

Innofil3D will continue its current business activities. The experienced and successful team will expand their skills to strengthen the BASF 3D Printing Solutions team. The acquisition also makes Innofil3D an important development and production platform for filaments.

Recreus launches new ‘straightforward print’ polypropylene filament

Spanish raw material manufacturer recreation has launched its newest thermoplastic filament – PP3D (polypropylene). Notoriously difficult to print on, the material contains a primer that must be applied to the build bed before each print. Recreus claims that the primer enables easy printing on the polypropylene filament, thus allowing “maximum adhesion of the material to the bed”.

Chemical resistant and durable

Because of its chemical resistance and longevity, polypropylene is suitable for a range of household and industrial applications. We often see the material used for food and beverage containers, chemical packaging (like bleach bottles), medical syringe components, and even for the dashboards of cars. For engineering companies that want to 3D print the material, PP3D is suitable for functional prototypes that require electrical insulation, heat resistance, acid resistance, salt resistance, and oil resistance. According to Recreus, PP3D complies with European guidelines for materials that come into contact with food, although 3D printing of food containers is generally not recommended, regardless of the material.

Recreus PP3D primer

Apparently the Recreus polypropylene filament differs from the others by the inclusion of the special primer in the box. The primer ensures adhesion and prevents warping and deformation during the printing process. It is worth noting that the primer reaches maximum adhesion at only 40 ° C and peel off at 80 ° C, allowing users to work with extremely low bed temperatures. This reduces energy consumption and extends the life of the heated components in the printer.

In order for the primer to be successful, it is recommended that the user wait five minutes after application to allow the primer to dry on the bed. During the printing process, the bed should be set to 40 ° C. When the part is finished and rotated to 85 ° C, the printed part is completely released with minimal force.

Easy Sensor Makes Filament Measurements A Snap

How tight are the manufacturing tolerances of modern FDM printer filaments? Inquisitive people want to know and when such heads are tied to handy people [Thomas Sanladerer]In the end, you have something like this homemade filament meter to collect the data you are looking for.

The heart of this setup is not, as one might assume, an exotic laser device for optically measuring the filament diameter. These exist, but they are expensive parts of the kit that are best left to the manufacturers who use them on their production lines to make sure the filament meets their specifications. Dear, [Thomas] used a very clever homemade device that relied on a hall effect sensor and a magnet on a lever to do the job. The lever is attached to a roller bearing that runs on the filament as it spools through the sensor. Variations in diameter are amplified by the lever arm moving a magnet over the Hall sensor, resulting in a signal proportional to the filament diameter.

The complete test stand has a motor-driven feed and take-up reel as well as three sensors that measure the filament at three different points in the radius.
