Polymaker makes use of recycled polycarbonate from Covestro for 3D printing filament

Covestro recently announced that Polymaker has started using a recycled polycarbonate it has developed for 3D printing. Polymaker, a leading manufacturer of 3D printing materials, produces Polymaker ™ PC-r, the polycarbonate filament for 3D printing from recycled plastic.

In a recent press release, Covestro stated that the material comes from 19-liter bottles owned by Chinese water company Nongfu Spring. These bottles contain polycarbonate in a fairly pure form.

Covestro mixes the plastic waste with virgin material to create a polycarbonate base that can be extruded into filaments for use in various industries, including electronics and the automotive industry.

These filaments are especially suitable for brands that want to make their supply chain more sustainable, especially when combined with 3D printing technology for industrial-scale production.

Compared to virgin material, the filament made from recycled material has a lower CO2 footprint. The product also gains in durability and meets industry-specific requirements, including the Blue Angel and EPEAT seals.

Since the waste comes from a single source, it is not necessary to sort and identify the plastics beforehand. Covestro mentioned that since the waste is fairly pure, it could be inexpensively recycled. In China, large-volume water bottles are widely used in private households and public places, so they are available in sufficient quantities.

The high-temperature post-consumer product has excellent thermal stability and strength. Because of its characteristics, a constant temperature chamber is required to print successfully.

INTAMSYS, a machine manufacturer, performed print tests with Polymaker ™ PC-r on its FUNMAT PRO 410 printer. It was found that the printer could achieve a double jet temperature of up to 500 ° C and a platform temperature of up to 160 ° C. The chamber temperature can be up to 90 ° C. This chamber temperature would prevent printed parts from warping and would allow larger and more complex models to be printed more successfully.

Tests have shown that the Polymaker ™ PC-r material is extremely easy to work with. The test results show good values ​​for tensile strength, elastic modulus, flexural strength and flexural modulus, which were slightly higher than for standard polycarbonate.

It should be noted that at TCT Asia, Polymaker will be showcasing a wide range of materials for 3D printing, ranging from high performance plastics to unique aesthetic solutions. The event is scheduled for May 26-28, 2021 in Shanghai, China.
