Jabil Introduces PA 0600 Additive Filament

New material innovation eliminates formaldehyde fumes from 3D printing Delrin or POM-like materials

Jabil Inc. (NYSE: JBL) today announced the availability of a patent-pending, innovative new additive material, Jabil PA 0600, that provides the high strength and rigidity required for demanding aerospace, automotive and automotive applications is required in the industry. This latest advancement from Jabil Engineered Materials was designed, formulated, and manufactured in the company’s Minnesota-based Materials Innovation Center for use in traditional and additive manufacturing.

“We are building on Jabil’s materials science heritage to improve existing polymers or create new ones at the molecular level to help our customers,” said Matt Torosian, director of additive product management at Jabil. “Our focus on innovation led to the discovery of our PA 0600 filament, which has a unique formulation with acetal plastic properties but without the potentially dangerous formaldehyde emissions associated with overheating.”

Providing material strength, stiffness and security

According to a March 2021 Jabil survey on trends in 3D printing technology, additive manufacturing adoption is growing significantly, especially when it comes to making critical manufacturing fixtures, fixtures and tools, as well as moving prototypes into production and scaling the manufacturing of production parts . Almost 50% of those surveyed expect the use of 3D printing for production parts to double in the next three to five years. Additionally, 90% of respondents use plastics and polymers for 3D printing, up from 74% two years ago.

The versatile filament Jabil PA 0600 is well suited for a variety of applications, as the material has high rigidity, dimensional stability and good wear resistance as well as low-friction, self-lubricating properties. The new filament offers the high levels of smoothness and durability typically required in the manufacture of gears, bearings, and rollers. Devices and tools; and work fixtures, posts and nests. Additionally, the material simplifies post-processing, including fly cuts, taps, and heat bars.

The story goes on

In addition, the Jabil PA 0600 filament offers improved functionality that is typically associated with Delrin® acetal plastic or alternative POM materials – without the risk of formaldehyde emissions if the material overheats. The filament Jabil PA 0600 was formulated without formaldehyde, so that no harmful odors or vapors are released during processing. This gives product designers more flexibility, speed and security when developing complex parts that need to be resistant to fatigue, friction and abrasion.

Accelerating the availability of advanced materials

More than 50% of respondents in the most recent survey said long material development cycles are a major challenge, up from 27% two years ago. To accelerate the availability of specialty materials, chemists, materials scientists and additive manufacturing experts at Jabil Engineered Materials have developed filaments, powders, pellets and custom materials with unique and enhanced properties.

“Jabil PA 0600 filament is an exciting technological advancement that offers a viable Delrin alternative with the durability and strength required for a wide range of additive manufacturing applications,” said Bas de Jong, vice president of market development. Materials and strategic partnerships at Ultimaker. “Previous Jabil materials, already available on the Ultimaker Marketplace in Ultimaker Cura, provide users with real results and confidence for the first time when printing on our 3D printers and using the printed applications.”

The filament Jabil PA 0600 is featured on the Ultimaker Marketplace in the Ultimaker Cura 3D printing software and is available through DigiKey.
