Evonik develops new PEEK filament for industrial 3D functions

Evonik recently announced that it has developed a new 3D printable filament based on PEEK (polyetheretherketone). Evonik is launching the new filament under the brand name INFINAM® PEEK 9359 F.

The ready-to-use, high-temperature and chemical-resistant material is particularly suitable for the additive manufacturing of sophisticated industrial plastic parts.

The high-performance polymer could be processed in common extrusion-based 3D printing technologies such as FFF (Fused Filament Fabrication) or FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling).

The natural colored PEEK filament with a diameter of 1.75 mm is wound on 500 g spools, which are suitable for direct use in commercially available FFF / FDM 3D printers for PEEK materials.

Due to its unique properties, including high mechanical strength, hydrolysis resistance or inherent flame retardancy, it is particularly suitable for the production of lightweight and high-performance 3D parts for the aerospace, automotive and oil and gas industries.

Compared to stainless steel, 3D parts made from INFINAM® PEEK 9359 F are around 80 percent lighter and 30 percent tougher and have excellent fatigue resistance.

These combinations of properties make the new filament from Evonik the preferred high-performance material as a metal replacement for demanding lightweight construction applications. INFINAM® PEEK 9359 F is also characterized by excellent wear resistance and low sliding friction and is therefore ideally suited for the production of lightweight components.

The 3D components printed from INFINAM® PEEK 9359 F withstand permanent temperature effects of 250 ℃ or short-term temperature effects of over 300.

Sylvia Monsheimer, Head of Additive Manufacturing and New 3D Technologies at Evonik, announced that following the commercial success of the PEEK filament for medical technology, the company is now expanding its product range to include industrial material quality.

Sylvia said: “We use our innovative strength in polymer chemistry to constantly develop new filaments, powders or photopolymers and bring them to market in order to diversify the material landscape and thus enable new infinite 3D applications.”
