The recycling of carbon fiber reinforced polypropylene filaments offers a cycle for the reuse of materials and supports sustainability goals related to the elimination of plastic waste

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. & GOLDEN, Colo. , May 19, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Braskem (B3: BRKM3, BRKM5, and BRKM6; NYSE: BAK; LATIBEX: XBRK) (“Company”), the largest polyolefin manufacturer in America and the leading manufacturer of biopolymers worldwide, today announces its expanded partnership with Vartega Inc . (“Vartega”), a leading recycler of advanced materials, including carbon fiber reinforced plastics, for a new 3D printing filament recycling program. Braskem recently expanded its 3D printing product portfolio with a new, innovative carbon fiber reinforced polypropylene filament for 3D printing (“CF-PP”) (“FL900PP-CF”). This product is made from 100% recycled carbon fibers from Vartega and is optimized for use with Polypropylene from Braskem. Every pack of Braskem Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polypropylene Filament sold contains information on how the used carbon fiber filament is recycled through this program. Every year 24,000 tons of carbon fiber waste are sent to landfills.

“We are very pleased to provide Braskem with sustainable high-performance carbon fibers for their new 3D printing filament,” said Andrew Maxey, Vartega CEO. “And by using our recycling capacities, Braskem and Vartega can offer an end-to-end solution for 3D printing customers. This collaboration is an excellent demonstration of what is possible with modern supply chains and novel solutions to traditional waste problems is not the only option, and Vartega is tapping its own stash of valuable materials in failed prints, supports and filament scrap. “

Braskem is committed to a climate-neutral circular economy. In 2018, Braskem committed to reuse, recycle or recycle 100% of plastic packaging in its stores by 2040.

The story goes on

Jason Vagnozzi, Braskem Commercial Director of Additive Manufacturing, said, “Our new filament recycling program with Vartega is part of Braskem’s broader strategy to provide solutions for recycled products and reduce plastic waste. We are excited to partner with Vartega and leverage their capabilities to ensure that every spool of carbon fiber reinforced polypropylene is properly disposed of and does not land in landfills. Plastic plays an important role in society and we believe programs like this will allow plastics to play their role in promoting innovation and innovation To continue providing sustainable solutions. “

Braskem’s carbon fiber reinforced polypropylene filament offers excellent mechanical and thermal properties, as well as low warpage, allowing users to 3D print lightweight and exceptionally rigid parts for high-end applications such as automotive, aerospace, marine, sporting goods and more . Best of all, the FL00PP-CF is made from 100% recycled carbon fiber with the same performance you would expect from fresh carbon fiber. Braskem’s carbon fiber reinforced polypropylene filaments are available in 1.75mm and 2.85mm diameters for a variety of 3D printer applications and can be purchased online via M. Holland eStore at www.mholland3d.com/products/braskem-cf-pp.

As the North American leader in polypropylene, Braskem is deeply committed to a circular economy where nothing is wasted and everything is changed. Last year Braskem announced that it had achieved its 2020 goal of becoming a blue member of Operation Clean Sweep®. Braskem also became a founding member and funding partner of the Polypropylene Recycling Coalition, an initiative by The Recycling Partnership focused on improving U.S. recycling access for polypropylene (PP) and ensuring that PP is largely recovered and reused in end markets such as food Beverage packaging, consumer goods and automotive. Braskem is also a founding member of the Alliance to End Plastic Waste.
