As 3D printing fans, we always welcome new 3D printer filament options to the community as they often add a variety of options to a user’s arsenal. We reported on interesting innovations back in September 3D printing materials from the Chinese filament manufacturer Polymaker, which provided polycarbonate filaments for desktop 3D printers. The company is now available on its website and has added two new stylish color options for PC Plus: True Black and True White. In addition, the company informs us that a new packaging system has been introduced to make it easier to interact with the materials.
To freshen up your memory, PC-Plus is such an interesting 3D printer filament because it provides top-notch manufacturing to a desktop 3D printer. Polycarbonate materials are much more durable than ABS or PLA and find widespread uses from automotive and aircraft components to electronics, construction and even data storage. However, they usually require extremely high heat and expensive industrial 3D printers, making them out of the reach of most of them designers, engineers, and hobbyists. This is not the case with PC-Plus, which was specially developed for normal FDM desktop 3D printers.
As Aaron Jennings of the company told 3ders.org, PC-Plus is the first of two members to ship this new polycarbonate family – PC-Max ™ is due to arrive later this year – which was developed in collaboration with Covestro provide improved 3D printing materials for designers, engineers and hobbyists, ”he says.
In addition, the company has announced that it will improve the user experience and packaging information. PC-Plus is now – like the rest of its repertoire – delivered in a newly designed package. ‘As avid 3D printing enthusiasts, our engineers and industrial designers understand the frustrations and organizational problems of having multiple spools and materials available, and the resulting questions about how much filament I have used so far on this particular role. Or what were the recommended printing temperatures and speeds? Says Jennings.
So what has changed? Well, the new clear spools now have a simple dial indicator that makes it easier to see how much is left – especially useful for printers with poor visibility and accessibility. To ensure accuracy, the label of each material is designed to have a measurement related to the molecular weight of that material. Polymaker has also redesigned its labeling system to ensure a perfectly placed label every time while delivering a nice, clean aesthetic that compliments the company’s new branding, ”adds Jennings. An information sheet on all functions and print volumes in five languages is now also included.
